Established in 1960
In 1960 only a few historical societies existed in Victoria. Robert Menzies was Prime Minister (1949-1966) and Henry Bolte Premier of Victoria(1955-1972). Rock-n-Roll replaced the Pride of Erin and Elvis was King of the Pops. ‘Good Neighbour’ volunteers welcomed ‘New Australians’ and helped them acclimatise. Pubs were shut at 6pm and only churches opened on Sundays. Women wore hats and gloves and had to leave work when they married.
Since then CMHS has survived to operate the ‘Box Cottage’ Museum from 1984 onwards and the dissolution of the City of Moorabbin in 1994.
The City of Moorabbin is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to preserving the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin.
The Society acts as the custodian of the Box Cottage Museum.
Visitors can explore the museum and the eclectic items on display.

statement of purpose
The city of Moorabbin (CMHS) is a small not-for-profit organisation devoted to preserving the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin. It exists for the benefit of the public, as well as the Societies members. Among other activities, it acts as the custodian of the Box Cottage Museum (BCM), allowing the cottage and its exhibits to be open for viewing by the public. The society maintains a library of the area’s history, and generally acts as a resource for members of the community with an interest in local history.
